Vancouver 2010 Mayor's Arts Awards for dance

Co.ERASGA is pleased to announce that Artistic Director Alvin Erasga Tolentino has been named the recipient of the Vancouver 2010 Mayor's Arts Awards for dance.

Since founding Co.ERASGA in 2000, choreographer Alvin Erasga Tolentino has been exploring issues of gender, identity, ethnicity and cross-cultural dialogue in works such as SOLA, BATO/stone, MINORI, VOLT, FIELD, SHE SAID, OrienTik/Portrait, BODYGlass, (with Peter Chin), PARADIS/PARADISE, ADAMEVE and 2010's Shadow Machine. Through his extensive community work and partnerships in dance, international touring productions, as well as his award winning explorations of the medium on film, Tolentino has acted as an ambassador for dance in Canada, with his work finding appreciative audiences nationally and across four continents.

Established in 2006, the Mayor's Arts Awards are presented in 13 categories and recognize Vancouver artists or community members who make a significant contribution to the creative life of our city. Recipients are nominated by a jury of peers convened by the Alliance for Arts and Culture. Details of the awards can be found at: http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/cultural/gasp/awards/mayorsarts/index.htm

Each recipient in the Studio and Performing Arts categories is invited to select an emerging artist who demonstrates the promise of the next generation, with Alvin Tolentino selecting Bharata Natyam dancer Sujit Vaidya.

The public awards ceremony will take place Wednesday, November 24, 2010.
