Maleta is a movement based film that encompasses one's immigrant experience told through a series of imagery and dance. Maleta aims to push its audience to reflect on what was and what is now; to witness the true immigrant resilience at its core. Maleta is about a young filipina woman accessing memories as a child once uprooted; navigating the challenges of understanding culture, adulthood, relationships and aspirations.

ABOUT SOPHIA:

Sophia Laurio also known as Sophia Sosa is a Filipina interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, BC Canada. With so much passion for dance and knowledge, Sophia Sosa has traveled to New York city to seek the highest form of foundational and professional training under Street Dance pioneers and innovators like Elite Force Crew and the MOPTOP family. For over a decade she dedicated her dance practice in multiple Street style dance genres like Hip Hop, Afro-Dancehall, House, Waacking and Locking. Sophia Sosa has proven herself to be a dominant force in the art of freestyle world by earning wins and a spot at the judges table in many battles locally and internationally.

With the love that Sophia has for performance art and the powerhouse that she is, Sophia Sosa has debuted in international stages like Raw Artist Emerge in Los Angeles California, Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance in New York City and Manila Fringe Festival in Manila Philippines. For over a decade Sophia has expanded her dance facility by training in a plethora of styles outside of Street Dance such as contemporary dance, GAGA, theater, acting and creative writing. Through her most recent work, Sophia explores her identity and the complexities of being a woman of color pushing activism through the arts. She has been featured in prestige theater and dance platforms like Dancing on the Edge, Vancouver Fringe Festival, Manila Fringe Festival, Festival of Recorded Movements, Daloy Dance Company(Philippines), Co. ERASGA, Simon Fraser University and Emily Carr University.

Her immigrant journey has ignited her to unravel her purpose as an artist, student, director and leader in her own community by starting her own non-for-profit organization, Barangay Project Society, focused on providing free art & dance education to BIPOC youths and emerging artists alike. In her classes, Sophia shares her experiences of navigating through the arts as a visible minority and specifically as a woman of color. Sophia aspires to give back to the community that raised her through free dance mentorships while pushing the Hip Hop mantra “Love, Peace, Unity and Having Fun”. She aims to guide the next generation of young artists to grow and mold their voices to be the leaders of their communities.

In addition to Maleta, we will also be presenting the work of Sevrin “Sevi” Emnacen-Boyd:
